International organization seeks startup with innovative solution for Africa's agriculture

During a visit to Brazil, Real Seed Project has been to Sistema Fiep's Centro Internacional de Inovação to find companies big ideas that could revolutionize the agribusiness of the African continent
Technology is an essential part of agriculture future and, to have a deeper impact, innovative ideas need to emerge. In order to "hunt down" the best solutions for agribusiness, Real Seed Project has travelled to India, Indonesia, Australia, the United States, and more recently Brazil. During the stay here, last week, the group was in Curitiba at Sistema Fiep’s Centro Internacional de Inovação, and heard the ideas of ten partner startups.

Our country has been selected because of the relevance of the agricultural sector. "Also, there are some similarities with African countries, such as the tropical climate and the importance of small farmer’s production. The country is also becoming more and more innovative”, says biochemical engineer Lina Belmaachi, co-founder of Real Seed Project. To reach this conclusion, she and the other four members (young people specialized in areas such as Business and Data Analysis) have researched the AgTech Startups and have found that the most relevant are the Brazilian ones.

Stimulating Ecosystem

The choice for Curitiba was an indication of the StartUpBRICS, a French entity with which Sistema Fiep has signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), with the aim of bringing the innovation ecosystems of the two institutions closer together. Lina says she was impressed by the diversity of startups in the Fiep System incubator. "It's clearly a stimulating ecosystem”, Belmaachi says.
Among the companies that pitched was GoEpik - startup that had been “incubated” by Sistema Fiep and was elected the most attractive startup in 2017 by the 100 Open Startups ranking -, Já Entendi, Lynx, Metha, Qualicode, 4Vants, Waas, Peacelabs, Favo and Agricultura Simples.

Opportunity abroad

Partnering with various African agribusiness stakeholders, such as industries, the next steps of Real Seed Project is to analyze the startups who have participated in the pitch. “Then, we will decide whether some of them can be connected to one of our partners and potentially take part in projects in Africa" Belmaachi explains. Those selected will also be part of the 50 Best AgTech Startups ranking, which will be unveiled in 2018 during a conference in Paris.
